How to clean toilet seats: ‘Instant’ way to banish yellow ‘stubborn’ toilet seat stains

Jun 07, 2023

Yellow stains are nasty, and unfortunately found on toilet seats all around the world. Whilst you may associate them with public bathrooms in shopping centres and petrol stations, this isn’t the only place they can strike. Yellow toilet staining is commonplace in homes too. And no matter how much you clean and how careful you are, those stains can just keep coming back. Yellow stains on toilet seats can be caused by a number of things, but they are most commonly caused by urine, limescale or by the use of bleach.

Fans of cleaning sensation Mrs Hinch have taken to dedicated cleaning pages on Facebook to share their top tips for removing yellow stains from toilet seats.

Posting on one particular page, Cathy Loughlin asked: “How do you get rid of yellow stains off of a white plastic toilet seat?”

Cleaning enthusiasts were quick to share their advice on the issue. The majority recommended using The Pink Paste to clean toilet seats.

Tracey Deer said: “The Pink Stuff Paste brings it straight off with no need to scrub.”

Christine Entwistle said: “Pink Stuff Paste and a cloth. Rub gently and it will all come clean.” Anna Davidson agreed: “Definitely Pink Stuff Paste.”

Edwina Kane recommended: “Use Pink Stuff Paste. I have no clue what’s in it but it’s magic for sure.”

Leanne Crone advised: “Gently rubbing Pink Stuff Paste on the yellow stains will get them off. Works a treat.”

Susan Absolom added: “The Pink Stuff Paste. I use it on its own with a cloth and it comes off straight away.

“If this doesn’t work for you, leave it on the stains for a while before wiping it off.”

While many may reach for the bottle of bleach hiding away in their cleaning cupboard, Mrs Hinch fans urged households to avoid using it to clean their toilet seats.

Nicola Reed-Kingston suggested that bleach will make the problem worse. She said: “Don’t use bleach, it turns it yellow.”

Vicki Anderson similarly agreed as she said: “Don’t use bleach. That’s what made it yellow in the first place.”

Christine Morse commented: “Bleach just oxidises, it doesn’t actually get rid of the stains. I favour Cif but it has to be cleaned regularly.”

Experts at Best Plumbers Club also agreed that bleach can cause yellow stains to form on toilet seats.

They said: “If your toilet seat is turning yellow, the bleach you’re using may be to blame.

“Bleach is an excellent disinfectant but it might discolour your plastic toilet seat, especially when used in an undiluted state.

“It turns the toilet seat yellow because of a chemical reaction between the bleach and the plastic on the toilet seat. You can opt to try a different brand or dilute the bleach more before using it on the toilet.”
